Melrose PLC was floated on AIM on 28 October 2003 with the strategy of acquiring businesses whose operational performance can be improved to create shareholder value. The Executive Directors have extensive experience of identifying and evaluating acquisition opportunities, quoted and unquoted, both in the UK and overseas. During December 2005 Melrose moved onto London's main exchange.

In May 2005 Melrose acquired two specialist engineering companies, Dynacast and McKechnie, for an enterprise value of £429 million. Since acquisition, Melrose has significantly improved the operational performance of the businesses and has now sold a large part of McKechnie for more than the original acquisition price for both businesses. On 31 August 2007 shareholders received a return of capital of £220m (together with dividends equalling approximately 95% of the original capital).  Melrose is now continuing to develop Dynacast and its other businesses and looking for its next acquisition.
